This essential LP edition presents one of Hopkins' finest albums, MOJO HAND, which was originally issued in 1962 on Bobby Robinson's label, Fire Records. (The LP would be retitled Lightnin' Hopkins just two years later for Sphere Sounds imprint re-release, featuring a different cover-sleeve). MOJO HAND is widely regarded as one of the true masterpieces from Hopkins' catalog. The material ranges from classic blues to R&B-flavored numbers. There's even a charming novelty Christmas blues, titled SANTA. These are moody and powerful performances. Despite the variety, the album is remarkably cohesive becuase Hopkins' amalgamation of styles can be heard within each song.
The LP's title track, originally released as a single, has become one of the artist's siganature tunes. Have You Ever Loved A Woman features Hopkins on piano, while Glory Bee is characterized by Hopkins' trademark guitar playing. Sometimes She Will alos showcases his instantly recognizable guitar and pronouced vocals. Awful Dreams is notable for its apocalytic test. The album is a an excellent example of the Texas-blues idiom at its finest.
In addition to the original long play, this viinyl lovers collector's edition includes 2 bonus tracks from the same period: Black Cadillac and Good Morning Little School Girl. All of these songs give a a solid and revealing portrait of Lightnin' Hopkins' genius as well as his rightful place in the blues pantheon.
