This essential LP includes one of their finest albums as a duo, originally released by the Folkways label. Songs Of Memphis Slim & "We Willie" Dixon (1960). All of the compositions were written by Willie Dixon. On these recordings Dixon's bass is hear up front and his tone is clear as a bell. It's a rare opportunity to hear Willie's mastery without being buried under a pile of guitars and drums. The energy level of the instrumental "Joggie Boogie" builds througout the track, with Dixon and Slim upping the ante with each chorus. Each player takes two rounds of solos on this number and both times Dixon astounds with his ferocious chops, stamina and sense of humor.
Slim and Dixon also tackle Stewball, Beer Drinking Woman, and 44 Blues, with tremendous energy and taste. Urban enough to connect with inner-city blues fans and flexible enough to forge new audiences among starry-eyed blues revivalists on both sides of the Atlantic, Memphis Slim was what would now be called a crossover artist. Like Dixon, the pianist-vocalist was amiableand adaptable - characterstics that also came across in their music. The album also includes some of Dixon's more obscure compositions like Chicago House Rent Party and Unlucky.
I addition to the original LP, this collector's edition LP includes 2 bonus track from the same period: Choo Choo and Now Howdy.
